Biography: Virginia McKenna was born in London and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. Since then Virginia has established herself as one of the country’s best loved actresses, with numerous awards to her credit.

Among the awards she has won are; The British Academy Award for her role opposite Peter Finch in ‘A Town Like Alice’, again for Best Actress Award for ‘Carve Her Name With Pride’ opposite Paul Schofield, The BBC Best Actress Award for her portrayal of Juliet in ‘Romeo and Juliet’, The Variety Club’s Award as Best Actress in ‘Born Free’ opposite her husband Bill Travers, the S.W.E.T. Award for Best Actress in a musical for her performance in ‘The King and I’ with Yul Brynner.

At the R.S.C. Virginia played Lucy Lockitt in ‘The Beggar’s Opera’ and Queen Gertrude in ‘Hamlet’,

Virginia’s deep love of animals and her care for their welfare gave rise to the now very successful charity Zoo Check and while filming in India managed to fin the time to mastermind the release and transportation of six tigers from almost certain death in a circus here in Britain to an enormous game reserve in India.

In the Autumn of 1994 Virginia played the role of Violet in the film version of ‘September’ adapted from the book of the same name.
