Biography: Clive Conway is the impresario responsible for the highly successful An Audience with… theatre series. His guests include leading politicians, writers, thinkers and actors and as a Guardian feature describes “...he has transformed the classic show business format of an intimate soirée with the stars into a curious and highly successful mix of politics, literature, entertainment and sheer notoriety.”
Born in London in 1953, brought up in Aldeburgh and educated at The King’s School Ely, Clive studied flute at The Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 1976. He toured for several years as a recitalist, gave performances in the Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall as well as on radio and television and made many recordings with Principals of major London orchestras including the works of Hummel and his contemporaries. Clive also conceived the idea for, and co-founded with Janet Way, the Oxford Flute Summer School in 1987, which is still regarded around the world as the leading course of its kind.
Having a wide network of friends and colleagues in the theatrical and musical worlds, Clive started producing anthology performances during the 1990s with many well-known actors such as Edward Fox, Wendy Craig, Peter Barkworth and Robert Powell and writer, the late John Mortimer.
The success of these shows, which brought top quality performances to regional theatres, inspired Clive to develop the Audience with…idea. His hallmarks are of dogged determination and eloquent persuasion and these combined resulted in Tony Benn agreeing to An Audience with… in 2001. This was an immediate critical and box office success for theatres throughout the country, particularly in the provinces, blazing a trail since followed by such as David Frost, Alastair Campbell, Clive James, Jonathan Miller, Michael Portillo, John Sergeant, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and a hundred others.
Clive has enabled theatres to expand their audiences and has found a use for venues on nights when they would otherwise be dark. His business continues to develop, producing up to 300 performances each year throughout the UK and beyond and attracting huge media interest. …As the Daily Express has put it, Clive is “…a man in tune with the times.”
