Biography: Sir Timothy was appointed Director of the National Galleries of Scotland in 1984, re-designated Director-General in January 2001. He began his museological career at Manchester City Art Galleries in 1968, as Assistant Keeper and the Acting Keeper in the Department of Paintings. In 1972, he became Assistant Keeper, Department of Ceramics at the Victoria and Albert Museum, and in 1976 he was appointed as Assistant Keeper in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum; he remained there for two years, responsible for the Turner Bequest and all the British drawings and watercolours, before being appointed Director of Manchester City Art Galleries, where he served from 1978 to 1984.
Sir Timothy received the British Institute of Management’s Special Award in 1991, the Gulbenkian Prize for Charles Jenck’s Landform (2004), a Herald Angel for his contribution to The Age of Titian exhibition (2004) and received the Garrett Lifetime Award for Business Sponsorship for the Arts (ABSA) at the Barbican, London, in 2005.
Sir Timothy is the author of many publications and contributes to numerous learned journals.
