Biography:

Steve Harley was born Stephen Nice in 1951. In the late summer of 1953 he contracted polio during a countrywide epidemic. He spent roughly four years of his life between the ages of two and sixteen in hospital it was during this time that Steve first heard Bob Dylan and realised that his life was  to be preoccupied with words and music.

Interviewed by several newspaper editors, Steve signed indentures to train with Essex County Newspaper before moving to the East London Advertiser

Steve in began his singing career in 1972 in London Clubs with some of the leading lights of the London Folk scene. He later joined folk band ODIN as rhythm guitarist and co-singer, which was where he met the first Cockney Rebel  violinist, John Crocker. Steve then formed Cockney Rebel and the band signed to EMI for a guaranteed three album deal and released The Human Menagerie early in 1973.

The sleeve of 'Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)' (1975) One Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel single, reached number one in 1975 in the UK and many European countries and is regularly voted among the top singles in the history of the charts.  Steve took time out from the rock world to spend time with his chilfren but did perform in New York and London in the musical-drama Marlowe. Steve’s performance was described by one leading critic as “a major and moving performance.”
