Biography:

John Julius, 2nd Viscount Norwich, was born in1929. He spent twelve years in H.M. Foreign Service, with posts at the Embassies in Belgrade and Beirut and at the Disarmament Conference in Geneva. In 1964 he resigned to become a writer.

Lord Norwich first books was about the medieval Norman Kingdom of Sicily, The Normans in the South and The Kingdom in the Sun. They were followed by two travel books, Mount Athos (with Reresby Sitwell) and Sahara; A History of Venice; The Architecture of Southern England; Fifty Years of Glyndebourne; and an anthology, A Taste for Travel; The 3 part Byzantium series; 1999 saw the publication of a book on Shakespeare’s history plays, Shakespeare’s Kings. 

He has been General Editor of Great Architecture of the World, The Italian World, The New Shell Guides to Great Britain and The Oxford Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Art.

On radio, Lord Norwich was for four years Chairman of the popular BBC panel game My Word.  For television he has written and presented some thirty historical documentary films, on subjects which include the Fall of Constantinople, Napoleon’s Hundred Days, Cortes and Montezuma, Maximilian of Mexico,and the Knights of Malta.   

Lord Norwich is Chairman of the Venice in Peril Fund, Co-Chairman of the World Monuments Fund.
