Patricia Routledge in Admission One Shilling

Award-winning actress Patricia Routledge is touring with Clive Conway Celebrity Productions in a one-woman show that tells the extraordinary story of Myra Hess.

The production, Admission One Shilling, tells how pianist Myra Hess played a series of morale-boosting, spirit-lifting lunchtime concerts at London’s National Gallery throughout the darkest days of war.

The story, related in Dame Myra’s own words and compiled by her great-nephew, the composer Nigel Hess, tells how the “great adventure” of these 1,600 concerts began and how they continued while the Luftwaffe’s bombs rained down on London.

Routledge - best known for her TV appearances as Lancashire housewife turned detective Hettie Wainthropp and super-snob Hyacinth Bucket - stars as the redoubtable Hess.

It also features piano music by Bach, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Schumann and Chopin played by international concert pianist Piers Lane

Admission One Shilling plays The Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich on 12th Nov 2011 and the West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge on 7th January 2012.
