IT is such a privilege to watch a master at work.
It doesn’t really matter what the craft is - it is inspirational to see talent on show.
In this case it is Edward Fox, whose role in The Day of the Jackal makes the film one of the most memorable ever.
He is on tour in a one-man show bringing to life the works and biography of author Anthony Trollope.
You don’t even have to be that familiar with the writing of this Victorian author to appreciate the show.
The Georgian Theatre is such an intimate setting for any production, but when all you have on stage is one man, a coat stand, small table and armchair it feels like you are a guest in someone’s home.
It adds to the power of such a great performance.
There was applause at the end of each extract from Trollope’s writing, except for one which described the demise of a very difficult woman.
Such was the power of the spoken word that silence seemed to be the only appropriate response.
It was an amazing experience and I wouldn’t hesitate to be first in the queue if this show comes round again.
WHAT: An Evening with Anthony Trollope
WHERE: The Georgian Theatre Royal, Richmond
VERDICT: I wouldn’t have missed this for the world.
