Description: With Robert Daws
The life of John Betjeman - ‘‘Teddy bear to the Nation’ - in words and music.
By Christopher Matthew. Original stage production by Amanda Waring
‘Summoned by Betjeman is a splendid show. A portrait of the wonderful Sir John Betjeman, described by The Times as ‘Teddy Bear to the Nation’ and told entirely in his own words. Robert Daws acts, nay lives, the part of Sir John. From the moment he comes on stage with an apology for being late – ‘I am the late John Betjeman’ he holds us in thrall.’ John Heald. Chairman, The Betjeman Society.
As a reading, ‘Summoned By Betjeman’ has been performed at many of the countries leading Literature Festivals and theatres. This autumn it has been transformed into a theatrical tour de force for actor Robert Daws and pianist Peter Lyons.
It is a celebration of the much-loved poet’s life. His loves, his fears, his beliefs, his enthusiasms and above all his humour.
It takes its audience on a rich and magical journey drawn from Betjeman’s journalism, letters, broadcasts and, of course, his poems – including such favourites as A Subaltern’s Love Song, Hunter Trials, Executive and Seaside Golf.
Accompanying this is a wealth of music, from Elgar to Walton, from Jazz to Pop.
Just before his death Sir John was asked if he had any regrets. He replied, ‘ I wish I’d had more sex.’
Summoned by Betjeman unravels the truth behind such statements. It also allows us to be entertained once more by one of our most gifted poets and broadcasters and delight in one of England’s great eccentrics.
