Jan Morris CBE is the author of some 40 books of travel, history, memoir, biography and fiction. Her best-known works include the Pax Britannica trilogy about the climax and decline of the British Empire, and studies of Venice, Oxford, Trieste, Manhattan, Hong Kong, Wales, Spain and the United States.. She was the correspondent of The Times on the successful British Mount Everest expedition of 1953, and was a Commonwealth Fellow in the United States in the following year. She lives at Llanystumdwy in Wales, in the converted stables of her former family home, and is a member of the Gorsedd of the National Eisteddfod of Wales, and an honorary D.Litt of the University of Wales. She is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and an honorary fellow of her old Oxford college, Christ Church
