Chay's achievements include rowing across the North Atlantic in a 20ft Open Dory in 92 ays for which he was awarded the British Empire Medal. In 1971 Chay was the first person sail non-stop westwards around the world and as a result, was awarded the CBE. Since 1989 he has been motivating and challenging the British public through running The Challenge Business.
